Broadscope Women’s Group

Three years ago, Broadscope Disability Services took feedback from several women in our Independent Living Program who expressed a desire to have a more active social life, and created Women’s Group. Time is usually spent enjoying a meal together at a restaurant in the community where they listen to each other’s stories including triumphs and struggles, and lots of laughter.

Since many of the women in the group use wheelchairs, and transportation around the greater Milwaukee area can be difficult and costly for individuals that use wheelchairs, the group struggled to get together on a regular basis. Through funding from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, the group is now able to meet at least twice a month; once for a social outing and once for a peer-to-peer mentoring session.

It is our hope and our vision that providing Women’s Group with more possibilities to go out and explore will build confidence & strengthen relationships so that, with time, group members will independently pick up the phone, call up a couple of their friends from the Women’s Group and make plans to do something fun in the community.
